What was it?
The Klickity Allium was a white pendant lampshade sold by Hirst & Hirst for £42 and selected by The Sunday Times Style in August 2012. Its alternating curved panels create the rounded shape of an allium flower head.
Design and usefulness
The all-white finish places emphasis on form and shadow. It is decorative without relying on a printed pattern, so it could sit comfortably in minimalist, Scandinavian or more traditional rooms.
What worked
- Strong sculptural shape
- National press recognition
- Neutral palette
- Original retail price and period are documented
Points to consider
- Archive image is a press clipping rather than a studio photograph
- Open construction may expose the bulb from some angles
- Current electrical compatibility must be checked
Buying or collecting one today
On a used example, check for bent panels, incomplete fixings and heat discolouration. Use only a suitable modern LED bulb within the original fitting limits.
Hirst & Hirst verdict
A confident piece of affordable British lighting design that still looks remarkably current.
