Archive review: This retrospective assessment uses surviving Hirst & Hirst records and contemporary press material. It is not a claim that the product is currently stocked or newly tested.
What was it?
The 600 ml Glugg bottle borrowed the red cylinder, triangular tag and warning typography of a fire extinguisher. Bella featured it in a back-to-school selection and recorded a retail price of £9.95.
Design and usefulness
The concept is carried through more completely than a simple printed bottle. It was clearly designed to be noticed in a school bag or office, though the shape remains conventional enough to hold and carry.
What worked
- Memorable complete visual concept
- Reusable 600 ml format
- Documented price and press coverage
- Strong inexpensive gift
Points to consider
- Original food-contact material is not documented in the archive
- Seal condition will deteriorate with age
- Not suitable for emergency identification
Buying or collecting one today
A surviving bottle should be treated as a collectible unless its material, cap seal and hygiene can be verified. Do not assume an unused old bottle remains suitable for drinking.
Hirst & Hirst verdict
A playful, affordable bottle whose visual gag is stronger than its surviving specification record.
